City Warns Norwalk Residents To Watch Out For Scams

NORWALK, CT — The city released information this week for Norwalk residents about various scams and how to avoid them.

In a Facebook post Monday, city officials said scams can happen to anyone, and scammers "are constantly finding new ways to target residents through phone calls, text messages, emails, social media and even in-person interactions."

The city advises residents to take the following steps before sending money, sharing personal information or clicking a link:

• STOP — Don't let anyone pressure you into making a quick decision.
• CHECK — Verify who is contacting you by using an official phone number or website—not the information provided in the message.
• PROTECT — Never share passwords, social security numbers, bank information or other sensitive personal information with an unexpected caller or contact.

The city also reminds residents to be especially cautious if someone demands immediate payment or asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or other unusual forms of payment.

"When in doubt, pause and talk to someone you trust before taking action," the city's post reads. "If you think you have been the victim of a scam, report it to local law enforcement and the appropriate agency or financial institution as soon as possible."
