Norwalk Police Detective Retires After 27 Years

NORWALK, CT — A Norwalk police detective retired this week after nearly 30 years with the department.

In Facebook post Friday, police said Detective Courtney Downer retired Sept. 1 after a successful career proudly and faithfully serving the Norwalk Police Department for 27 years.

According to police, Downer became a sworn member of the department in February 1999.

Downer served in several divisions throughout his professional and dedicated career, including the department's Patrol Division and Detective Bureau, according to police.

He was promoted to detective in 2014, police said.

Downer was also honored for his police work during his career, according to the department.

"He received a Unit Citation and a Meritorious Commendation for his exemplary work in helping to bring a successful close and capture of a male suspect accused of assault and in possession of a firearm," police wrote on Facebook. "He was recognized for his dedication, diligence and swiftness in resolving a case of very serious magnitude and in preventing further gun violence."

Downer also received a number of letters from Norwalk citizens and outside organizations in recognition of his professionalism, dedication and compassion throughout his career, according to police.

"We want to thank Courtney for his loyal service, which helped make our department and the city of Norwalk a better place for us all," the department's post reads. "Please join us in wishing Courtney the best in his retirement."
