NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Police Department announced this week they are investigating illegal auto repair businesses in the city.
In a Facebook post Monday evening, police said they are working with the Norwalk Fire Department's fire marshal division and inspectors from the city's Planning and Zoning department "to identify and address illegal auto repair businesses operating without the proper licenses, permits or approvals."
According to police, illegal and unlicensed auto repair operations can put drivers, passengers and the community at risk.
"Repairs performed without proper licensing, inspections or qualified technicians may create serious safety hazards, including brake, steering, tire and electrical failures," police wrote on Facebook. "These businesses may also lack proper insurance and accountability."
Before having work done on their vehicles, police ask residents to make sure the repair facility is properly licensed and operating legally.
"Your safety—and the safety of everyone on the road—depends on it," the department's post reads.
Police also ask residents who know of an illegal or unlicensed auto repair garage operating in Norwalk to submit a tip through TIP411.
According to police, tips can be submitted anonymously and will be forwarded for review, inspection and appropriate enforcement.
