NORWALK, CT — Norwalk police are warning residents about a scam involving individuals impersonating Planning and Zoning officials and requesting money.
According to authorities, residents have reported falling victim to the scheme, in which scammers pose as local officials and seek payments.
Police emphasized that the Planning and Zoning Department will not contact residents with unsolicited requests to send money.
Scammers may use official-sounding language or documents that appear legitimate to convince residents to make payments, police said.
Residents who receive suspicious phone calls, text messages, emails or other communications requesting money are advised not to send payments or provide personal or financial information.
Police offered several recommendations to help residents avoid becoming victims:
Anyone who has already sent money to a suspected scammer should immediately contact their financial institution and report the incident to police.
Police also encouraged residents to share the warning with friends, family members and neighbors to help prevent additional victims.
