Norwalk residents can join five guided walks in November through the NorWALKer program, according to the Norwalk Health Department. The department partners with the Norwalk River Valley Trail to host the walks and is seeking residents and community partners to launch or host walking groups.
"Walking is such a simple way to boost physical and mental health, but it also brings people together," said Jahliah Green, community health promotion specialist. "The NorWALKer Program isn't just about getting steps in; it is about connecting neighbors, discovering local history, and encouraging everyone to feel confident exploring Norwalk safely."
All five walks begin at 10 a.m. Walkers will meet Monday, Nov. 2, and Monday, Nov. 23, at Oyster Shell Park playground, 95 N. Water St., and Monday, Nov. 9, and Monday, Nov. 30, at Mathews Park Gate House, 295 West Ave.
The Monday, Nov. 16, walk meets at the Riverside trailhead north of Casatelli's Marble and Tile Imports, 34 Riverside Ave. The guided outings offer residents a chance to connect and learn to navigate the trail, according to the department.
The Health Department also partners with the Norwalk Bike/Walk Commission on safety education and advocacy for safer infrastructure. The commission's public meetings take place on the first Monday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., giving residents an opportunity to raise neighborhood safety concerns.
Working with the Recreation and Parks and Planning and Zoning departments, the Health Department has mapped 17 walking routes with one to four loop options each and neighborhood history. Residents can download English and Spanish walking maps, request hard copies or contact Green at jgreen@norwalkct.gov about leading a neighborhood walking group.
