Beloved Norwalk School Custodian Remembered For Kindness, Generosity

NORWALK, CT — Alfred Gautrau, a custodian who worked at various Norwalk public schools for 15 years, will be remembered for his kind and generous personality.

Gautrau, affectionately known as "Al G," died Oct. 11 at the age of 51.

According to his obituary, he was a lifelong resident of Stamford who was "known for his unmatched sense of humor and compassionate heart of gold."

In a statement, district officials extended their sympathies to Gautrau's family and friends, including the school community that had become his family during his employment.

Gautrau began his career with Norwalk Public Schools in 2006, working as a custodian floater before being assigned to the evening shift at West Rocks Middle School. He later transferred to an earlier shift at Brien McMahon High School, where the school's teachers and staff quickly became a part of his family.

Gautrau recently transferred to Norwalk High School so he could be more available for his own family, district officials said.

"We in the Facilities and Maintenance Department are heartbroken at the loss of Al," NPS Facilities Department spokesperson Rita Clark said in a statement. "He will always be remembered as a kind, gentle and generous man to everyone that knew him. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time. May he rest in peace."

Gautrau leaves behind a loving wife and three beautiful children.

According to the Bosak Funeral Home, calling hours for family and friends will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. An on-site funeral service will follow, and a reception will be held in Shelton.
