Coaching Trends for 2019

Dr. Frank Costanzo of Norwalk, Connecticut, shares some of the coaching trends for 2019.

Just like any business, there are new trends each year that affect the bottom-line. Coaching is no different. To ensure a business is successful, it is important that business owners (coaches) stay on top of the latest trends. The new trends in coaching will help you to create a meaningful connection with your client, increase the number of clients and lead your clients to the next level in their careers. Let’s take a look at the latest trends that will affect coaching this year.

  1. Technology — With the advances in technology, coaching will become more accessible and on various platforms. There will be coaching apps, virtual coaching, and “on-demand” coaching. Clients will be able to have a session with their coach at any time and any place on a variety of devices. Since technology has reshaped coaching, coaches will try harder to be more “human” with increased communication and find ways to make interactions feel like they are “face-to-face.”
  2. Measurable Results — Now that coaching is slowing becoming accepted, clients want to get value for their money. Clients will choose coaches based on their track record. Some of the tools used to quantify and qualify results include pre-and post-360 interviews, promotions, and structured feedback.
  3. Credentials — At the moment, coaching is not regulated. Therefore, anyone can call themselves a coach. It is important that clients ask for credentials, this includes training and experience in the industry they are specializing in. In the near future, coaches will be required to be certified and adhere to higher standards. For those who are qualified, they will raise their rates to stay competitive and work harder to provide unique solutions.
  4. Use of Positive Psychology — Since positive psychology can be found everywhere, such as the Internet, social media and TV, the next logical use for it will be in coaching. By using positive psychology techniques, a coach can help a client break through mental blocks as well as replace a negative internal dialogue with a positive one.

The coaching industry will continue to expand as the need for solving specific problems increases. Coaching will also become widely accepted as not a way to overcome a challenge, but to help a client achieve more goals. It will be seen as a tool that can lead to advancement within an organization.
