Coronavirus Deaths Reach 119 In Norwalk, Cases At 1,973: Mayor

NORWALK, CT — Two coronavirus-related deaths were reported in Norwalk as of Friday, bringing the total number of residents who have died of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to 119, according to Mayor Harry Rilling. Another 13 confirmed cases were reported to bring that total to 1,973.

Statewide, another 55 deaths were reported, which brought the total up to 3,637, according to state health officials.

However, the net number of coronavirus hospitalizations in Connecticut dropped by 76 on Friday, bringing total hospitalizations to 740 patients. (Don't miss local and statewide news about coronavirus developments and precautions. Sign up for Patch alerts and daily newsletters.)

"It is with sadness that I share the news that we have lost two more residents to COVID-19," Rilling said. "My thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones. As some try to get back to normal, do not forget those we have lost as we continue to battle this virus."

  • Mayor Rilling was joined by Grace Farms Foundation and the Norwalk Police Department at City Hall to accept a donation of 11,000 surgical masks. More information can be found at norwalkct.org.
  • On Monday this week, the City launched its new online outdoor dining permit application. To date, the City has received 50 applications for outdoor dining and has approved 34. Mayor Rilling has waived all permit fees to help support local businesses. Officials remind local businesses that they must obtain a permit before conducting outdoor dining to ensure plans meet state and local health guidelines otherwise they will face penalties.   • The State of Connecticut launched a “What’s Open Outdoors” webpage to show the status of state parks and when they may be closed due to parking capacity. If parks and beaches in Norwalk reach capacity and are closed, that information will be shared on Facebook (@CityofNorwalk) and Twitter (@norwalk_ct).
  • Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day. Mayor Rilling and the American Legion encourage residents to pay tribute to fallen heroes at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.) on Monday by lighting candles and placing them on front porches or leaving a light on in the window. "As we head into the holiday weekend, I ask residents to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day," Rilling said. "Let us honor and remember our war heroes who lost their lives in service to our country defending and fighting for our freedom. Please join me on Monday night by lighting a candle in honor of our fallen heroes."
