Coronavirus Norwalk: Mayor Rilling Offers Sunday Update

NORWALK, CT — The city had 17 confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, according to the latest announcement from Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling.

The number of confirmed cases in Connecticut have soared past 300, and eight people of died. See Rilling's statement below:

City officials are working closely with partners at the state and federal levels, as well as partners in Norwalk, to monitor and respond to COVID-19, the 2019 novel Coronavirus. Statewide updates
can be found online at ct.gov/coronavirus. Mayor Rilling provided the following Norwalk-area specific updates regarding COVID-19 coronavirus as of 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2020:

• Since yesterday, there are six new positive cases in Norwalk, bringing the total positive reported cases in Norwalk to 17. In Fairfield County, the number of new positive cases went from 140 to 208. The age and sex of these individuals will not be released. The public is asked to continue to take precautions as community spread is likely happening across the state.
• Mayor Rilling ordered Cranbury Park and all School Properties closed until further notice. This order is on top of yesterday’s order to close the playgrounds, basketball courts, and skate park at Calf Pasture Beach and Veteran’s Park. Anyone found on these properties can be charged with criminal trespassing.
• Residents are reminded to not flush cleaning wipes, paper towels, rubber gloves, and other such items down the toilet. Flushing these types of items increases the likelihood of blockages and damages to the sanitary sewer lines, pump stations, and other critical infrastructure.
• Governor Lamont’s “stay safe, stay home” order goes into effect at 8 p.m. tomorrow. While grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, and other essential businesses will remain open, residents are encouraged to only go out if necessary. If someone does have to shop, please practice social distancing and be mindful of your surroundings.

“As we are seeing, this virus is highly contagious and is spreading in the community. I fully expect the number of residents contracting coronavirus will continue to rise unless we all take proper precautions,” Mayor Rilling said. “My top priority is to protect the health and safety of our entire community. I hope no other closures of public property happen, however, without further cooperation, it seems likely other facilities will be shut down. These are difficult, yet necessary decisions I must make for our City.”
