NORWALK, CT — Costco, the members-only wholesale store located at 779 Connecticut Avenue, plans to demolish a nearby vacant hotel to expand the store's parking and build a new tire center, according to recently submitted plans.

A project narrative submitted to the city on Aug. 31 by BL Companies, on behalf of the Costco Wholesale Corporation, indicate the company seeks to redevelop portions of the land at 789 Connecticut Avenue, where the former DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel building currently sits.

Under these plans, the company would demolish the vacant hotel in order to expand and improve the Norwalk store's existing parking garage, as well as relocate the Costco tire center to a new building.

The proposed project will combine both lots, and the store's current two-level parking garage would be expanded to provide additional parking and safer circulation, according to the plans.

Additionally, a new 5,400-square-foot standalone tire center would be built along Connecticut Avenue.

The existing DoubleTree entrance would remain and allow for direct access to the lower level of the parking garage, while Costco's entrance would be modified to provide access to the former hotel area while maintaining the direct connection to the upper parking deck leading to the main entrance of the store's retail warehouse.

The proposed tire center, with associated parking, would be accessible from the existing Costco entrance, as well as the lower level of the parking garage.

If approved, work on the project is expected to begin in the fall and be completed in about a year, according to the plans.

The submitted plans are currently scheduled to be discussed during the Conservation Commission's meeting Tuesday night.

The Norwalk Hour reports Costco purchased the 3-acre DoubleTree land this past spring after it was auctioned off. The hotel itself has been vacant since a foreclosure was approved in 2018.
