The three-story brick and glass Center for Science, Health and Wellness will provide increased space for NCC’s growing Nursing and Allied Health programs and state-of-the-art laboratories for the science programs.

Norwalk Community College educates more nursing, allied health and emergency medical workers in Fairfield County than any other college.

“The Center for Science Health and Wellness will be an outstanding resource for both the college and the community, and a model of green technology,” said NCC President David L. Levinson, Ph.D.

NCC’s nursing faculty and staff collaborated with Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in the design of the nursing and allied health spaces in the new building. These spaces include a simulated hospital unit with patient care rooms replicating the equipment and layout of hospital rooms at Greenwich, Norwalk and Stamford Hospitals.

Nursing and Allied Health labs have examination and hospital rooms, a reception desk and a hospital bed with ventilators that replicate an Intensive Care setting. The entire facility uses an integrated electronic medical records system. In addition, the facility also includes a respiratory therapy unit and comprehensive equipment which allows for simulation education with equipment that ranges from digital baby scales, blood pressure cuffs, IV and feeding pumps, to transport stretchers and EKG machines.

The Center’s ground floor houses the Exercise Science program, a Wellness Center, and Physical Activity and Athletic Coaching classes. The Exercise Science program prepares students to work as exercise physiologists, strength and conditioning coaches and health-fitness professionals.

The Wellness Center is equipped with showers and locker rooms and complete line of Hoist and Paramount equipment that includes a full body circuit, free-weights and functional training machines.

A cardiovascular training room stocked with Precor and Stairmaster equipment featuring TV monitors and iPod hook-ups is also available.

The Wellness Center also includes an Exercise Science laboratory with cutting edge equipment including a metabolic cart to measure oxygen consumption and energy expenditure. The lab’s equipment will be used for medical assessment, such as graded exercise testing, evaluation of aerobic capacity, sports performance, and resting metabolic rate analysis.
