Explosive, Toxic Vapors Released In Norwalk Warehouse: FD

Fire officials said an explosion that released chemicals into the building was reported at a warehouse in Norwalk.

NORWALK, CT — An explosion that released chemicals into the building was reported Thursday afternoon at a warehouse in Norwalk, according to fire officials.

In a news release, Deputy Chief Timothy Reardon said the hazardous materials incident was reported around 2:30 p.m. at a one-story warehouse for building supplies on Muller Avenue.

Workers at the warehouse had self-evacuated prior to firefighters' arrival, Reardon said.

Crews found explosive and toxic vapors in a confined area of the building and worked with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to mitigate the hazard, Reardon said.

The product was released from a medium-sized tank in a storage room, Reardon said. The incident was brought under control within two hours by a crew of 15 people.

Four workers were assessed by Norwalk Emergency Medical Services for inhalation injuries. No firefighters were injured, Reardon said.

The Norwalk Fire Marshal Division and Connecticut DEEP are investigating the incident.
