Former City Clerk Mary Roman Dies From Coronavirus, Mayor Says

Roman, reportedly an accomplished senior Olympian, was 83.

NORWALK, CT — Mary Roman, a former Norwalk City Clerk and an accomplished senior Olympian, died Monday night of complications from the new coronavirus (COVID-19), Mayor Harry Rilling announced. She was 83.

"Mary was a wonderful person and an inspiration to us all," Rilling said in a statement. "She had a can-do, never quit attitude. She was kind, caring, and selfless. She brought international recognition to our city through her athletic prowess. My deepest condolences to her family – she will be sorely missed. May she rest in peace."

Roman was the city's third casualty from COVID-19 and died at Norwalk Hospital. The Norwalk Hour reports that in addition to serving as City Clerk under three different administrations, Roman also was a banking executive. She competed in senior Olympics Games for several years in a host of throwing disciplines, winning several gold medals.

The website NancyOnNorwalk.com writes that Roman was removed from a ventilator on Monday afternoon, and she passed away several hours later.

As of Monday, Connecticut had 415 confirmed coronavirus cases, 270 of which were in Fairfield County, according to state officials. In Norwalk, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 had reached 28 as of Monday, according to Rilling.
