Fugitive From Vermont Robbery Arrested In Norwalk: Police

The suspect ran across I-95 in a failed attempt to elude police.

NORWALK, CT — A 33-year-old Norwalk man - wanted by Bennington, VT police in connection with a robbery - was arrested by Norwalk police Monday, but not before he ran across I-95 in a failed attempt to elude officers, according to Norwalk Police Lt. Terrence Blake.

Norwalk police were contacted by the Bennington department on Monday that the suspect, Zachary Dumas, was believed to be staying at a home on Cedar Street in Norwalk.

"Dumas had an active arrest warrant for larceny from a person, criminal threatening and habitual criminal which stemmed from a robbery of a restaurant," Blake stated. The charge of habitual criminal is for repeat offenders.

Members of the Norwalk Police Special Services Division went to the area to conduct surveillance
and spotted Dumas exiting a Chevrolet sedan on nearby Summit Avenue.

Officers moved in to arrest Dumas, but upon seeing the officers, he "fled on foot, running behind a business on Cedar Street and then down a hill and onto I-95."

Dumas ran across I-95 and then up the embankment on the other side, which leads to the rear of the Norwalk Fire Department Station 2.

"Special Services Officers radioed Dumas’s location to back-up officers, who chased Dumas
briefly before tackling him to the ground and taking him into custody behind the firehouse," Blake stated.

Additionally, police checked the Chevrolet that Dumas was driving and discovered it had been stolen out of Troy, New York.

Dumas, who listed Cedar Street as his address, was charged with:

  • Fugitive from justice
  • Larceny, first degree
  • Interfering with a police officer

He was held in lieu of bail of $350,000, and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on July 3. If or when he will be extradited to Vermont is not known.
