NORWALK, CT — A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to aid the family of veteran Norwalk Police Lt. Praveen John, a 30-year member of the department, who recently suffered a stroke.

The fundraising effort was started last week by Sgt. Lee Young, and as of Monday evening, it had generated more than $23,000, which exceeded its goal of $20,000.

"Praveen is a very proud man who needs help during this time," Young wrote. "I would like to reach out to friends and family to help Praveen who still has financial responsibilities in providing for his family. Praveen is a dear friend and co-worker that I would like to help. We would appreciate any donation that could help him and his family."

John is a father of six, and he is currently unable to work as a result of the stroke, which the New Haven Register writes he suffered on Jan. 12.

Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik said he and the entire department are hoping the lieutenant makes a full recovery.

"We are all praying for him as well as his family," Kulhawik told Patch. "I know they are all going through a difficult time. This was a sudden and unexpected medical emergency and I know he will work hard to rehab and get back to work as soon as possible."
