Happy heart-healthy 4th of July

July 4th is formally known as a celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The fireworks bonanza that will soon light the sky over Brooklyn Bridge in New York will mark the end of a day of fun, family and feasts for many Americans. Nathan's famous hot dog eating contest is one feast that emphasizes the national preoccupation with food and fun. Many homes are also already filled with food in preparation for the holidays.

A word of caution is in order amidst all the holiday preparations i.e., to take note of modifiable factors such as diet that could contribute to high global death toll associated with cardiovascular diseases. The enclosed figures speak for themselves. The World Health Organization has set nine voluntary goals for the voluntary global management of cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases:

·         80% coverage of essential medicines and technologies
