Hero Cop Breaks Window to Rescue 1-Year-Old Child from a Hot Car

Norwalk police say the child was in 'distress' and the officer broke the window, crawled over the broken glass to rescue the child.

On Friday at 11:33 a.m., the Norwalk Department of Police Service responded to a child locked in a BMW at the Rowayton Library.

Patrol Officer Jeremy Salley responded to the scene and found a one-year-old female that had been locked inside the car for approximately ten minutes, police said.

Officer Salley saw that the child was red-faced and sweaty. Realizing the child was in distress, Officer Salley utilized a spring loaded window punch to break the driver’s window out, police said.

Officer Salley then crawled through the broken window and rescued the child, as the BMW’s security system would not allow the doors to be opened, police said. Norwalk EMS evaluated and medically cleared the child at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the child had been playing with the keys and had accidentally locked herself in the car. The child’s caretaker then immediately called police, police said.
