This focused day makes available to homeschool students many of the educational classroom programs regularly presented to traditional school groups by Aquarium educators. Options on March 13 include nine classroom programs for ages ranging from 4 to 15, a storytime for preschoolers and two study cruises onto Long Island Sound, with the event concluding with a fun family sleepover.

“You shouldn’t have to be enrolled in a formal school setting to have access to the unique educational programs of The Maritime Aquarium, so we’re happy to offer this special day and these unique learning opportunities to the many homeschooling parents and students in the tri-state area,” said Tom Naiman, the Aquarium’s director of Education.

Nine drop-off-style programs include: a one-hour “Shark Safari” program for ages 4 to 6; a one-hour focus on water pollution and a 90-minute exploration of watersheds for ages 7 to 10; and an hour-long careers discussion and a 90-minute climate-change lab for ages 10 to 13.

Plus, a “Seal-Spotting & Birding Cruise” (9-11 a.m.) and an “Oceanography Cruise” (1:15-3:15 p.m.) will be offered aboard the Aquarium's unique hybrid research vessel, RV Spirit of the Sound. All cruise participants must be at least 42 inches tall. Those under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

With advance purchase online by Thurs., March 12, discounted “Homeschool Day” admission is $16 for children (ages 3-12), $21 for adults, and $20 for seniors (65+).

Cost of any classroom program is additional, varying from $5 to $8 per person. Each cruise is $20 per person. (Story times for preschoolers – at 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – are free and require a parent or caregiver to be present.)

The Maritime Aquarium’s “Homeschool Day” will end with a special Family Sleepover, from 6 p.m. March 13 to 9:45 a.m. March 14. Enjoy dinner, games, behind-the-scenes tours, an IMAX movie, breakfast and more. Cost of the sleepover is $70 per person.

Spaces in the programs, aboard the boat and for the sleepover are limited, so advance registration is required. Get details about all of the “Homeschool Day” offerings – and sign up with the special advance discount – by going to www.maritimeaquarium.org/homeschool-students.
