'Illegal Basement Apartment' Fire Displaces 10: Norwalk FD
Fire officials said the basement of the house was gutted and its upper floors were damaged by smoke.
NORWALK, CT — Ten people were displaced after a fire broke out in an "illegal basement apartment" at a Norwalk home Saturday, according to fire officials.
In a news release, Deputy Chief Stephen Shay said firefighters responded to a house fire on Godfrey Street that began in an illegal basement apartment.
The home's basement was gutted by the blaze and its upper floors were damaged by smoke, Shay said. The cause of the fire was determined to be an electric space heater.

Ten people were displaced by the fire, however all of the home's occupants escaped without injury, Shay said. The American Red Cross provided housing for the displaced residents.
