Funds raised for charitable causes

STRATFORD , Conn. — Under bright blue skies and perfect summer weather, the Knights of Columbus gathered at Blackhawk Country Club in Stratford to celebrate a milestone event: the 10th Annual Sword & Shield Charity Golf Classic.

Hosted by Knights of Columbus St. Matthew Council 14360 and Our Lady of the Assumption Council 11077, the day brought together golfers, parishioners, sponsors, and supporters for a memorable celebration of faith, fellowship, and service. From the opening gathering to the final raffle drawing and dinner reception, the tournament reflected the core principles of the Knights of Columbus, Charity, Unity, and Fraternity.

Participants enjoyed a day of friendly competition on the beautifully maintained course while raising support for charitable initiatives that benefit local parishes and communities. The event served not only as a fundraiser but also as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when individuals come together in service to others.

A special highlight of this year’s tournament was the recognition of Co-Chair George Ribellino for his decade of dedicated leadership. Ribellino, who has helped guide and grow the tournament since its inception, is stepping down from his role after being accepted into the Diocese of Bridgeport’s Diaconate Formation Program. As he begins his journey toward becoming a deacon, fellow Knights expressed their gratitude for his years of service and offered prayers for his continued discernment and ministry.

During the dinner reception, Tournament Co-Chair Greg Matera presented Ribellino with a special gift on behalf of the tournament committee in recognition of his ten years of leadership, dedication, and commitment to the success of the Sword & Shield Charity Golf Classic. The presentation was met with warm applause and appreciation from attendees, reflecting the impact Ribellino has had on the event and the community it serves.

Reflecting on the tournament’s milestone anniversary and his own transition, Ribellino expressed appreciation for everyone who helped make the event a success.

“This tournament has always been about more than golf,” said Ribellino. “It’s about bringing people together in faith, friendship, and service to others. Watching it grow over the past ten years has been a true blessing, and I’m deeply grateful to the committee, our sponsors, our golfers, and the entire Knights of Columbus family for their support. As I begin this new chapter in Diaconate formation, I leave knowing the tournament is in great hands and will continue to make a positive impact on our community for years to come.”

Tournament organizers extended heartfelt thanks to the many golfers, dinner guests, committee members, volunteers, and the staff of Blackhawk Country Club, whose professionalism and hospitality helped make the anniversary event a success.

The Knights also recognized the generous sponsors whose support made the tournament possible.

Blessed McGivney Sponsors included AJ’s Landscaping Services, LLC, Stew Leonard’s, and Northmarq Capital. Fourth Degree Sponsors were Our Lady of Assumption Parish, Vitros LLC, Financial Advisory Services, the Matera Family, and O’Brien Care Management. Gold Sponsors included St. Rose of Lima Parish, Town Clerk Rick McQuaid, and Integrated Financial Partners represented by Jon Gonthier, CFA.

Additional support was provided by numerous tee sponsors and program sponsors from local councils, businesses, families, and community organizations.

As the tournament concluded, organizers reflected on a decade of growth and impact. What began ten years ago as a charitable golf outing has become a cherished tradition that strengthens bonds of faith and friendship while supporting important charitable causes.

“Year 10 was more than a tournament,” said Co-chair Greg Matera. “It was a witness to what our community can accomplish together when we answer the call to serve.”

With another successful event in the books, the Knights of Columbus look forward to continuing the tradition and welcoming participants back to the course next year.
