Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum Announces 2019 Schedule
The museum will offer an extensive range of engaging programs for youth and adults throughout 2019.

The LMMM 2019 Young Writers’ Competition, whose themes are inspired by the great mystery
genre trending in the mid-19th century and still widely read today, aims to inspire and challenge
all participants. The competition is open to all students, third through eighth grade. Their
characters will be drawn from 19th century members of the Lockwood or Mathews families, by
reading their history on the LMMM website, under the tab, “History,” and by talking to the
museum’s educators, if needed. For more information on LMMM’s Young Writers’

A juried exhibition will be held in the Billiards Room at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion
Museum. Artists can enter their work by visiting the Museum’s website at
lockwoodmathewsmansion.com. The jurying process will be conducted online. Open to all
artists, this exhibition will be juried by artist and Trustee Gail Ingis who will select
approximately 30 works from digital submissions. Size limited to not more than sixty inches on
any side. Media limited to paintings and drawings including: oil, acrylic, pastels, ink, graphite,
mixed media, etc. No photographs, prints or Giclées. Fee: $40 for 2 entries, $10 each for
additional entries. File size must be minimum 5x7” and high resolution, 300dpi. Submission
deadline is Mon., Mar. 18, 12 p.m.
From Corsets to Suffrage: Victorian Women Trailblazers

The exhibition, From Corsets to Suffrage: Victorian Women Trailblazers, will honor the
centennial of the 19th amendment, which passed in Congress on June 4, 1919 and was ratified on
August 18, 1920. The exhibition, sponsored in part by the CT Humanities, will feature objects,
images, suffrage pageantry, accessories, and period costumes to illustrate the strident activities
and important contributions of women across the state and the country, including those of
national renown such as Helen Churchill Candee and Elsie Hill, who were actively involved in
the women’s suffrage and are part of the Mansion’s diverse and fascinating history.
Tea & Lecture featuring Dr. Heather Munro Prescott
Fashioning Women’s Suffrage
Sun., May 19, 2-4 p.m.
Admission: $10 for members; $15 non-members
This fascinating illustrated lecture will show how suffragists used dress and other outward
symbols to promote their cause. Dr. Heather Munro Prescott is Professor of History at Central
Connecticut State University. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Science & Technology
Studies from Cornell University. In 1994, she joined the faculty at CCSU, and has served as co-
coordinator of Women’s Studies (1995-99) and chair of the history department (1999-2002).
Iced tea and light refreshments will be offered in the Mansion’s Billiards Room prior to her talk.
Treasure Hunters’ Adventure
Sun., June 2, 2-4 p.m.

Call to all detectives, pirates and treasure hunters! The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum,
in collaboration with Stepping Stones Museum for Children and Center for Contemporary
Printmaking, will launch a Treasure Hunters’ Adventure at Mathews Park. Discover history,
science and art with an old, faded map and clues that will lead you straight to a hidden treasure.
Treasure hunters will be able to play alone or as a team but they will need to bring their skills,
talents, and A-Game to find the treasure!
Old-fashioned Flea Market

Flea Market shoppers looking for bargains and treasures might have that opportunity at the
Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum’s Old-fashioned Flea Market where more than 80
vendors will be offering a variety of items including antiques, repurposed furniture, collectibles,
jewelry, specialty foods, crafts, household items, clothing, and toys. The Museum will be open
for $5 mini-tours and feature a White Elephant table where visitors can shop for rare
finds. Trendy food trucks will serve edibles to satisfy all palates, while a classic and antique car
show will entertain shoppers of all ages, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
The Mansion’s Roaring Twenties Gala

A decade known for great uproars and extraordinary social and economic changes including the
19th amendment, financial prosperity, Jazz-age, flappers, and the prohibition, to name a few, will
be featured at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum’s Roaring Twenties Gala. LMMM will
celebrate the highlights of this decade with music, an exhibit preview, a special presentation,
speakeasy cocktails and black-tie dinner.

In homage to LeGrand Lockwood, a railroad magnate and patron of the arts, and the artists who
mastered the “Machine Age,” such as Paul Cezanne, Edward Hopper and Camille Pissarro, to
name a few, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will launch an exhibition of works by
contemporary artists inspired by the railways and their impact on the environment and society.
The exhibit will be held in the Billiards Room at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum.
Haunted: Victorian Ghost Stories at the Mansion
Halloween Tours

The Victorian era is known for its riveting ghost stories and Gothic horror. From Robert Louis
Stevenson’s The Body Snatcher to Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost, readers in the 19th century were deeply engrossed in the dark tales from the other side. In keeping with this Victorian fascination, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will feature, Haunted: Victorian Ghost Stories at the Mansion, a series of Halloween tours that will focus on the history of the house and the chilling and legendary ghost sightings of the period. Visitors may run into the Mansion’s ghosts, who are haunted by the darker memories that are part of the rarely told history of the Lockwood and Mathews families. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The Mansion’s Great Gatsby Tea

The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum’s Great Gatsby Tea will be a luxurious whirlwind of
delicious refreshments that will immerse our guests into the grand and extravagant era of Francis
Scott Fitzgerald’s dashing and daring anti-hero. The event, chaired by LMMM Trustee Hunter
Arton will feature a talk entitled, Fashion for a New Era: Clothing the Modern Woman, by
Barnum Museum Curator and Clothing Historian Adrienne Saint-Pierre. Join us for a
fascinating look at what women wore and why, from everyday togs to the most glamorous
gowns. Ms. Saint-Pierre will present an illustrated talk about fashion of the teens and twenties
and how it defined “the modern woman.”
The Mansion’s Holiday Exhibit

The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum kicks off the Holiday Season with its traditional
display of trees and decorations highlighting the development of the holiday traditions during the
Victorian era in America. Visitors will see its evolution from the 1850s to the 1930s, as small
tabletop trees with edibles and handmade ornaments, turned into lavishly embellished trees that
stood on the floor and almost reached the ceiling. The Mansion will also feature 21st century
holiday decorations with magnificent trees and seasonal displays.
Holiday Open House

Admission: $5
The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will feature a joyful family-friendly event and
several hours of entertainment with dance and choral youth performances and a special
appearance by Santa Claus and his elf. During the event, the Mansion’s Café will be open to visitors and offer complimentary hot chocolate and sweet treats served by the Museum’s costumed interpreters.
