Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum receives a Major Grant from GE Capital to sustain and broaden its Educational Program

Norwalk, Conn. – The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum’s Education Program has been awarded a $10,000 grant from GE Capital. With this very generous support, the Museum plans to serve a greater population of students and continue to offer this National Historic Landmark as a site where students can learn, in stimulating and engaging ways, mid-to-late 19th century history, art, architecture, and technology.

GE’s Managing Director Communications Eleanor Mascheroni said, “GE Capital is pleased to support the work of Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, which plays a unique role in our community by providing an experiential window into living history. Visitors to the mansion experience life in the mid-19th century as it actually looked – to an industrialist, technology buff, and patron of the arts, and to the everyday people who worked to support one of the “fine houses” of the era. GE Capital’s support will enable school children from Norwalk to learn about history in an engaging way, consistent with our mission to support education and community development.” GE Capital provides financial support, volunteer manpower, and intellectual capital to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing the communities in which we live and work.

“We are truly grateful to GE for their generous support,” said Patsy Brescia, Chairman of the Board of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. “Their support will help us grow our Education Program and allow us to enrich the lives of thousands of students in Norwalk and throughout Fairfield County.” Ms. Brescia noted that GE is not new as a Mansion donor as the Fortune 500 Company had designed and funded the Mansion’s kitchen in the early 80s.

The Museum offers an array of educational programs to students including educational tours and PowerPoint presentations to public schools at a highly reduced admission, a writing competition to third and eighth graders, a successful internship program for high school students throughout Fairfield County, and free admission to children under eight years old.

Learning about the past helps students to better understand the present. Students explore the Mansion’s vibrant history, artistic legacy, outstanding architectural details, and life during the Victorian era. The Museum offer educators teaching tools that will enrich students’ curriculum and make learning history stimulating and memorable.
