Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars Win Tier 1 National Championship

Mid-Fairfield claimed the title with a 3-2 shootout victory over Assabet Valley of Boston on Sunday

The Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars U-14 girls hockey team will be coming home from Michigan as national champions.

The Stars captured the Tier I national championship Sunday with a 3-2 shootout victory over Boston's Assabet Valley in Rochester, Mich.

Chatherine Crawley accounted for all of Mid-Fairfield's offense Sunday, scoring both goals in regulation and then netting the game-winner in the shootout.

Crawley finished the tournament as Mid-Fairfield's leading scorer with seven goals and three assists for 10 points. Sasha Fritts (3-6) and Sarah McNamara (2-7) each recorded nine points while Ashley Carbone (2-6) followed with eight points. 

Mid-Fairfield, which completed the season with a 46-6 record, avenged its only loss during the week, a 3-2 shootout defeat to Assabet Valley in pool play on Thursday. The Connecticut team won five of six games en route to the title.

On Sunday, Mid-Fairfield twice erased one-goal deficits. Crawley tied the game 1-1 with 13:42 remaining in the second period, then pulled the Stars even again by scoring a power-play goal with 10:42 left in the third period.

Emma Farrel recorded 17 saves for Mid-Fairfield, which entered the tournament ranked third in the country, according to myhockeyrankings.com.

Locally, the Stars includes players from Fairfield, Darien, and Norwalk.
