Norwalk Football To Face McMahon on Thanksgiving

The Norwalk-McMahon football game on Thanksgiving is always big. For the Bears, however, this year's game rates as the school's biggest football contest in 13 years.

Norwalk (7-1) can clinch its first state tournament berth since 1998 with a win over the Senators in the annual Battle For Norwalk, which will be played this year at Jack Casagrande Field on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Norwalk comes in as a heavy favorite against McMahon, which at 3-6, probably rates as the FCIAC's most disappointing team this season.

Still, the Bears have to be weary of the Senators. Not only is this a rivalry game, but the Senators are capable of pulling an upset.

Five of McMahon's losses have come by eight points or less, including back-to-back defeats to FCIAC finalist Staples and New Canaan that were decided in the final minute. McMahon had four-quarter leads against both the Wreckers and Rams.

However, the Senators' defense was torched in their last game as Stamford's Bryan Boderick passed for 312 yards in a 28-20 win over McMahon on Nov. 12.

Norwalk has been led by a balanced attack all season as quarterback Delshaun Wilson, Johnny Anzalone and Tomar Joseph have each rushed for more than 400 yards this season.

Derek Edwards is Norwalk's top receiver with 32 receptions for 471 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Bears' strength also can be traced to a strong pass rush as they are nearly four sacks per game, led by Patrick Whalen with eight.

Last season, Norwalk edged McMahon 8-7 to finish the year at 4-6 in what was Pete Tucci's final game as the Bears' coach.

That victory sliced McMahon's lead in the all-time series to 31-18-1. The teams will be meeting for the 51st time on Thursday.
