Norwalk Call-In Bulky Waste Collection Program Begins In January

Norwalk's Call-In Bulky Waste Collection Program is set to begin in January 2018.

NORWALK, CT — Beginning January 2018, residents of the 4th Taxing District must call Customer Service to request a bulky waste collection. This pilot program is available to residents that receive City Garbage collection.

During this Pilot Program, the 4th Taxing District has been divided into four (4) sections and will be assigned one bulky waste pick up a month. The collection day will be on a Wednesday, according to a release.

Here is the January 2018 schedule for bulky collection:

  • 1st Wednesday (Dark Green): Wednesday, Jan. 3
  • 2nd Wednesday (Light Green): Wednesday, Jan. 10
  • 3rd Wednesday (Yellow): Wednesday, Jan. 17
  • 4th Wednesday (Red): Wednesday, Jan. 24

If there is a 5 th Wednesday in a month, there will be no collection scheduled. If collection is cancelled due to inclement weather, the collection will be postponed until the following month.

Residents must call Customer Service at (203)-854-3200 (ext. 4) before 3 p.m. on the Monday before their scheduled pickup day to request collection of bulky items. The items they are placing at the curb must be specified.

Acceptable items are:

  • bulky items including furniture (couches, chairs, bookcases, etc.)
  • mattresses and box springs
  • rolled rugs or carpets (less than 4 feet long, please)
  • lumber (cut into pieces no more than 4 feet)
  • large plastic items (children’s toys, outdoor furniture, etc.)
  • metal items and appliances (desks, bookcases, washing machines, dryers, etc. but they cannot contain Freon)

Unacceptable items are:

  • household hazardous waste
  • liquid waste (including paint)
  • tires
  • electronics
  • Freon appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators, etc.)
  • propane tanks
  • vehicles, motor parts or anything with a title of ownership (motorcycle, trailer, etc.)
  • yard waste
  • single-stream recycling
  • clothing and textiles
  • construction and remodeling debris (concrete, sheetrock, masonry, toilets, sinks, pipes, shingles, tiles, furnaces, etc.)
