Norwalk Coronavirus Update: 3 More Deaths, 17 New Cases

NORWALK, CT — Three more coronavirus-related deaths were reported in Norwalk as of Wednesday, bringing the city's total to 95, according to Mayor Harry Rilling. In addition, the number of confirmed cases increased by 17 to 1,719.

Statewide, the number of confirmed cases rose by 374 to 30,995 as of Wednesday, and the number of deaths also increased by 85 to 2,718, state health officials said.

Additionally, Coronavirus-related hospitalizations in Connecticut dropped by 55 to 1,445 as of Wednesday.

Fairfield County remains the state's largest hot spot, with 12,455 confirmed cases and 952 deaths as of Wednesday. But coronavirus hospitalizations in the county dropped by 30 to 489, according state health officials. (Don't miss local and statewide news about coronavirus developments and precautions. "I am sad to share news that three more Norwalk residents have died from COVID-19. My heart goes to out to their families, friends and loved ones," Rilling said. "We are not out of the woods yet, but it looks as though we are past the peak of positive cases. This really is a testament to the work of people physically distancing and staying home. I know it hasn’t been easy, but it has made a difference. I know everyone is eager to return to some sense of normalcy, but it will be a slow process. My team and I will be releasing a detailed plan soon on how we’ll gradually open more services and amenities in Norwalk."

The mayor added, "There are many in the community who are on the frontlines of this pandemic, but today, I want to offer a special thank you to all of the nurses who are working tirelessly to keep the community safe and healthy. Nurses always goes above and beyond and I am eternally grateful for the work you do."

• Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced the formation of a joint federal-state task force to combat COVID-19 related fraud in Connecticut. The task force will investigate and prosecute a wide range of misconduct related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including price gouging, healthcare and government program fraud, consumer and small business scams, lending scams, charities fraud, and cyber fraud. • Mayor Rilling will be joined by Norwalk Health Director Deanna D’Amore for a live Zoom Town Hall on Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. Members of the public will be able to ask questions in real time. More information is available at norwalkct.org/meetings.
• In an effort to continue to support Norwalk families with young children during a time of social distancing, early childhood partners have come together to offer virtual support groups for Norwalk families with children ages 0-5. The groups will be offered twice a week via Zoom in both Spanish and English, beginning Friday, May 8. One group will be held Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in Spanish and the other will be held Fridays at 3 p.m. in English. More information here.
• City officials and health professionals remind the public to call 9-1-1 for any emergency. First responders are well-trained and prepared to respond to calls, and residents should not fear coming in contact with COVID-19 by calling 9-1-1 or going to the emergency room.

• May 6 is National Nurses Day and School Nurse Appreciation Day. City officials offer thanks and praise to all of the nurses in the community.
