Norwalk Election 2021: Barbara Smyth For Common Council

NORWALK, CT — Election Day is approaching fast, and a number of key positions in town will be on the ballot.

To help readers make an informed decision on Nov. 2, Patch has reached out to local candidates to share their views on a few topics.

Democrat Barbara Smyth, 63, is running for the Common Council At-Large in Norwalk.

Occupation: Retired Norwalk Public Schools Teacher

Family: Peter Smyth, husband. I have three grown children, Alison, Ben, and Ethan; two grandchildren, Henry and Lila; and son-in-law, Randy.

Experience: Common Council At-Large member

Family in government: No

The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:

I believe quality of life is the most important issue facing Norwalk. I will continue advocating for fair taxes, affordable housing, sustainability, equitable and smart development, and a good quality of life for all of Norwalk’s citizens.

Critical differences between me and my opponents:

I listen to all perspectives, respect those who may differ from me, and collaborate with my colleagues in both parties to make the best decisions possible for Norwalk.

Accomplishments:

I am a two-term member of the Norwalk Common Council, Chair of the Community Services and Personnel Committee, and served as Common Council President from 2019-2020.

Other issues:

As a retired Norwalk Public Schools teacher, education is a top priority for me and I will continue to support robust funding for our public schools. Climate change has had a dramatic impact on Norwalk over the past few years, and particularly the past few months. I have made sustainability a top priority and will work with the Common Council and Mayor’s office to create a climate action plan to protect Norwalk from the devastating effects of climate change.

What else would you like voters to know about you?

I care deeply about Norwalk and its citizens. I take every decision I make on the Common Council very seriously. I research the facts and listen to constituents’ concerns before voting on any issue that impacts our lives.
