NORWALK, CT — This story was updated at 5:50 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2020: After a marathon political campaign, Election Day 2020 is finally here.

More than 15,000 Norwalk residents had voted early by mail before Tuesday's election, primarily due to the coronavirus pandemic, but turnout at the polls was still strong.

Lines were reported at several Norwalk polling sites in the morning, and while numbers tapered off during the day, the pace remained steady, according to officials.

"Voted early this morning, waited in line 1 [hour] 15 [minutes]," said a Patch reader named Kat. "Other than that things were moving smoothly."

By the afternoon, nearly 20,000 of the city's 56,000 registered voters had cast ballots at the polls Tuesday, The Hour writes. Add the more than 15,000 who have already voted, and Norwalk's turnout was exceeding 60 percent. Patch reached out to longtime Democratic Registrar of Voters Stuart Wells III Tuesday, but did not immediately receive a reply.
