Norwalk Mom Faces Deportation After 24 Years

A mother of four is being ordered to leave the country.

NORWALK, CT — A mother of four who has lived in the United States for 24 years is facing deportation. Nury Chavarria left Guatemala in 1993 and applied for asylum. which was denied.

Since 2011 she has had annual check-ins with immigration officials and got approval to live in the U.S., according to NBC Connecticut. Chavarria has no criminal record and works as a housekeeper who pays taxes.

In June immigration officials told her she had five weeks to leave. A New Haven attorney has taken up her case and hopes to reverse the order and said current policy doesn't make sense and her children will likely become burdens of the state.
