NORWALK, CT — A commercial packaging company that has called Norwalk home for more than 60 years was recently showcased by United States Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) as one of "Murphy's Monday Manufacturers."

Commerce Packaging Corp., located on Wilson Avenue in South Norwalk, is a family owned business, founded by Stanley Alexander in 1954, which is currently run by the third generation of the family.

It specializes in "manufacturing of corrugated boxes, wood crates and foam inserts for military-specific and commercial packaging," and currently employs 25 people at its 70,000 square foot facility.

Added Jeffrey Alexander, the company's vice president, "The state of Connecticut has a long history in manufacturing, especially related to the defense industry. We are proud to hire Connecticut employees and utilize local resources to supply the growing demands of our existing and future customers throughout the country."

From Murphy's announcement:

Commerce Packaging is currently in the process expanding its business to offer their skill base and expertise to companies across the United States. They recently won their largest prime contract with the federal government to deliver generators over the next few years. Commerce Packaging is a member of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) and the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce.

The manufacturing industry plays a crucial role throughout Connecticut communities, creating new jobs and accelerating the state's economic recovery. Today, Connecticut's thousands of manufacturers account for 10 percent of the state's jobs and 87 percent of the state's total exports. In order to protect and grow manufacturing jobs in Connecticut, Murphy has introduced two pieces of legislation that aim to strengthen existing standards and prioritize the purchase of American-made goods, the BuyAmerican.gov Act and the American Jobs Matter Act.
