Norwalk Police Officer Retires After 25 Years Of Service

NORWALK, CT — Officer John Haggerty officially retired July 4 after serving the Norwalk Police Department for 25 years.

In a Facebook post, police said Haggerty became a sworn member of the department in January 1997. He has served in the patrol division, traffic unit and training division.

In addition to being selected for recognition at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) awards, Haggerty was recognized during his career with Officer of the Month awards on several occasions.

He also received a Life Saving Award and Officer of the Year in 2003 for saving the life of an infant who had stopped breathing, according to police.

"[Haggerty] received numerous letters from the citizens of Norwalk and outside agencies for his professionalism and dedication during his career," police said on Facebook.

Prior to working for the department, Haggerty served in the United States Marine Corps, CT Army Reserve and the National Guard.

"We are very sad to see John leave," police said, "but we are very grateful for his loyal service, which helped to make our department and the city of Norwalk a better place for us all. Please join me in wishing him the best in his retirement."
