The Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars U-14-2 girls hockey team competed in the Tier II USA Hockey national championships this past week in Anaheim, Calif.
After winning all three of its round-robin games, the team defeated the Cape Cod Storm 2-1 in the quarterfinals and earned a bronze medal after reaching the semifinals. It was the only New England team to earn a medal in this national tournament, posting a 4-1 record.

Alexis Banquer was the leading scorer in the tournament for Mid-Fairfield with six goals and six assists for 12 points. Katherine Jackson also scored six goals and added two assists for eight points.
The Mid-Fairfield Blues U-18 boys team reached the finals of its tournament in Simbury before losing 3-1 on Sunday to Shattuck St. Mary's, a Minnesota school Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins attended for one year before playing junior hockey in Canada.The Blues were 4-2 in the event.

Jason Barre (3-4-7) and Nick Finn (3-3-6) were the leading scorers for Mid-Fairfield. Finn scored the only goal against Shattuck St. Mary's.
The Mid-Fairfield Youth Hockey Association also be well-represented at the girls Tier 1 hockey championships this upcoming week.
The tournament is set for Wednesday through Sunday in Rochester, Michigan and the MFYHA qualified teams in the U-14 and U-12 age groups. The U-14 team is 41-5 and ranked third in the country, according to the myhockey.com rankings.
The MFYHA teams are comprised of players from towns throughout Fairfield County, including Norwalk, and beyond.
Each squad opens on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and also plays on Thursday and Friday in pool play. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Saturday, followed by the finals on Sunday.
The U-14 and U-12 teams qualified for the nationals by winning their respective regional tournaments last month.
