Norwalk Scores and Standings: April 6

The Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars U-12 and U-14 teams each opened with victories over the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite on Wednesday in the Tier 1 girls youth hockey national championships in Rochester, Mich.

The U-12 squad posted a 2-1 victory while the U-14 unit recorded a 5-1 win in pool play.

Meghan Halloran and Lauren Hoey scored for the U-12 Stars, with Hoey's goal snapping a 1-1 tie in the third period.  Courtney DeNault preserved the win with 22 saves in goal.

Sasha Fritts had two goals and Sara McNamara, Nicole Lue and Katelyn Pantera one each for the U-14 stars, who entered the tournament ranked third in the country, according to myhockeyrankings.com

Emma Farrell recorded the win in net with 16 saves as the U-14 stars improved to 42-5.

Both squads will be back in action on Thursday against Boston-based Assabet Valley, which traditionally boasts the top girls youth hockey program in the country.

Round-robin play continues Friday. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Saturday, followed by the finals on Sunday.
