Norwalk stays alive in 13-year-old Babe Ruth tourney

The Norwalk 13-year-old Babe Ruth team won its third straight game Tuesday out of the loser's bracket in the New England Regionals.

After relying on pitching for its two previous wins, the offense came alive as Norwalk eliminated the New Milford Express, the Connecticut state champion, 12-0 in a game shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule.

Norwalk actually was blanked over the first four innings, but erupted for 10 runs in the final two frames to advance to Wednesday's loser's bracket final at McMahon.

Now 3-1 in the tournament, Norwalk will face Central Maine at 5:30 p.m. Central Maine lost to Cranston, R.I., 12-11 in the winner's bracket final on Tuesday.

Norwalk's one loss in the tournament came against Central Maine on Saturday, 3-2. Norwalk managed only one hit and stranded 12 runners in the game.

On Tuesday, Norwalk's Danny Romanello allowed only three hits over five innings with five strikeouts and four walks.

2. McDonagh falls short in U.S. Amateur Qualifying

Shorehaven's Tommy McDonagh, the reigning state amateur champion, fell short in qualifying for the U.S. Amateur championship on Monday at the New Haven Country Club in Hamden.

Only two spots were available to the 55 competitors. The first went to Orange's Ryan Leahey, who posted a 36-hole total of 7-under par 135.

Weston's Bernie D'Amato appeared to be in good shape after signing for a 4-under 138.

But after a two-hour delay due to lightning and heavy rain, D'Amato was pushed to first alternate by Spencer Cole of Greenville, S.C., carded a 5-under 137 to bump D'Amato to first alternate.

McDonagh was one of three players at 2-under 140. The U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 22-28 at Erin Hills and Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wis.

McDonagh is entered in the 109th Met Amateur Championship, which begins Wednesday at the Piping Rock Country Club in Locust Valley, N.Y.

After 36 holes of stroke play on Wednesday, the low 16 scores will advace to match play.

Other area players entered include Evan DeLuca of Smith Richardson, William Delano of the Country Club of New Canaan, Jeffrey Holzschuh of the Stanwich Club, D'Amato and Greenwich's David Pastore.

3. Norwalk Senior Legion Preparing for Regionals

Norwalk, which captured ts first American Legion state title with a 3-0 win over Branford on Saturday, begins play in the Northeast Regionals on Thursday in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Norwalk faces the Maine state champion on Thursday at 4:30 p.m in the first round.

If Norwalk wins, it would take on the New York-Massachusetts winner on Friday at 4:30 p.m. A loss means an early game on Friday at 9:30 a.m. against the New York-Massachusetts loser.

Eight teams are entered in the double elimination event - the six New England states, New York and the host team.

The winners of the eight regionals around the country advance to the Legion national tournament.

4. Chelsea Fitness Academy Set For Wednesday

The Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy will conduct its first annual jamboree on Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. at Testa Field. More than 500 summer campers, aged 8-15, are expected to attend.

Former New York Mets manager and ESPN baseball analyst Bobby Valentine will be the featured speaker. The event is open to the public.

5. Mike Garrity basketball summer camp

The Mike Garrity Elite Basketball Summer Camp at Compo Beach is set for the weeks of Aug. 15-19 and Aug. 22-26 from 2-4 p.m. each day.

The camp will be geared toward players from kindergarten through eighth grade and campers will be broken into groups based on age and skill level.

The camp stresses fundamentals. Development will come through drills, lectures and competition. Cost is $275 with a $75 discount for all players that sign up for both weeks.
