Along with Masuk, the Xavier football team has been the class of the state for the last two years.

Boasting a 24-game winning streak, the Middletown school is two victories away from a second consecutive 13-0 season.

Norwalk (9-1), which is coming off its first state playoff win in school history, will be the latest team to attempt to knock off the high-flying Falcons (11-0). The Class LL semifinal game is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at West Haven.

Norwalk features the triple threat of  Tomar Joseph, Johnny Anzalone and quarterback Delshaun Wilson, but running against Xavier has been nearly impossible. The Falcons feature a huge from line that is both physical and quick.

Xavier, which plays in the Southern Connecticut Conference, yielded just 7.6 points per game during the regular season while averaging 42.3. The Falcons were ranked No. 1 in the state for most of the season and it will take a monumental effort to beat them - something no one has done in two years.

In the quarterfinals, Xavier rolled over No. 8 Glastonbury, 34-6, while the fourth-seedeed Bears held off No. 4 Conard 21-15 on the road.

The Falcons also feature an elusive running back in Mike Mastroianni, who if not for his smallish 5-foot-9, 175-pound frame, would be attracting the interest of major colleges. Mastroianni rushed for 171 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns against Glastonbury.

Xavier amassed 389 yards, including 256 on the ground, while holding the Tomahawks to 49 yards of total offense.

The Norwalk boys soccer team was voted fourth in the final Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association large school poll.

The Bears, who finished the season 16-3-2, reached the Class LL semifinals before losing to FCIAC champion Trumbull.

Bunnell, which won the Class L title was voted No. 1, followed by Pomperaug, which defeated Trumbull 2-1 in the Class LL final.

Among other area teams, Trumbull (18-2-4) finished third after reaching the state finals for the first time in school history and winning its first outright FCIAC championship.

Fairfield Prep (14-1-7), the Southern Connecticut Conference champion, finished ninth. The Jesuits' only loss came to Pomperaug in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament.
