Norwalk Beats Staples 59-49 In Tom Keyes' Coaching Debut

Theboys basketball team gave coach Tom Keyes a win in his first game as the Bears opened their season with a 59-49 victory over Staples on Wednesday.

Freshman Roy Kane Jr. scored a game-high 17 points in his first varsity game for Norwalk, which won with defense, building a 30-22 halftime lead.

Norwalk outscored Staples 18-12 in the third period to extend its cushion to 48-34.

Rasheen Thompson added 13 points and  Ra'Von Shular chipped in with nine for the Bears, who are coming off a 4-16 season.

James Frusciante, a member of the Staples football team that lost to Xavier in the Class LL state championship game, led the Wreckers with 11 points.

Frusciante fueled a late run that allowed Staples to cut the deficit to four points before Norwalk held on.

Bassick opened defense of its FCIAC boys basketball championship Wednesday with a 70-47 victory over McMahon.

Larry McKinney scored 15 points and Andy Mitchell added nine for the Senators, who trailed 41-32 late in the third quarter when the Lions put away the contest with an 11-2 spurt.

Yasmine Walker scored 13 points and Jazmine Taylor added 10 as the McMahon girls basketball team defeated Bassick 57-28 to improve to 2-1. Bassick dropped to 0-3.

The Senators put away the game early, racing to a 26-4 lead after the first quarter.

Erica Stein scored 19 points as undefeated Staples held off Norwalk 50-47 in girls basketball action.

Jess Coelho added 11 points for the Wreckers, who improved to 3-0.

Erica Cohens had 13 points and four rebounds for Norwalk, which dropped to 0-2.

The contest was close all the way with Staples holding a slim 22-20 at the half and a 35-33 edge heading into the final period.
