Norwalk Boys Basketball Visits Ridgefield In Key Early FCIAC Battle

The boys basketball team has gotten off to a solid 5-1 start under first-year coach Tom Keyes and is coming off an impressive 75-54 victory over rival McMahon on Tuesday.
Now, however, the Bears begin to find out how good they are as they visit undefeated Ridgefield on Friday (7 p.m.) in a key early-season FCIAC contest.

The Tigers have run roughshod over its first six opponents, winning each game by no fewer than 21 points. On Tuesday, the Tigers handled Wilton, 62-41.
However, through its first six games, Norwalk has the look of an FCIAC playoff contender.

Like Ridgefield, the Bears are blessed with depth as four players scored in double figures aganst McMahon.
Ra'Von Shular scored 17 points, Rasheen Thompson 14 and Jabari Dear and Roy Kane Jr. 13 apiece for the Bears, who have won four in a row since an 80-69 defeat to Trinity Catholic.
At 0-6 and expected to contend for an FCIAC playoff spot, McMahon has been the league's most enigmatic team.
Still, the Senators have a good chance to get that elusive first win when they host New Canaan (1-5) on Friday.
The Rams have had trouble scoring and are coming off a 66-27 setback to Trumbull on Tuesday. New Canaan's only win came against Stamford Academy in the consolation game of the La Vista tournamemt.
The Norwalk girls team (4-3) looks to keep winning when it hosts Ridgefield in a 4:30 p.m.. The Bears have reeled off four straight victories following an 0-3 start.
The McMahon girls (2-6), who play at New Canaan in a 7 p.m., will be out to snap a five-game slide.

Ra'Von Shular scored 17 points Wednesday to lead the boys basketball team to a 75-54 victory over rival McMahon.
The Bears improved to 5-1 while keeping the Senators winless at a surprising 0-6.
After building a 57-45 lead after the third quarter, Norwalk put away the contets by outscoring McMahon 18-11 over the final eight minutes.
Larry McKinney scored 17 points for McMahon - but just two in the second half -- while Jimmy Martinez and Andy Mitchell each added 10 points for the Senators.
Rasheen Thompson chipped in with 14 points for Norwalk, which only held a 36-30 lead at the intermission.
Four players scored in double figures for the Bears as Jabari Dear and Roy Kane Jr. each contributed 13 points in the winning effort.
Norwalk took control by outscoring McMahon 21-15 in the third period to take a 12-point margin into the final quarter.
Wednesday's contest was the second game of a doubleheader between the rivals. In the earlier game, the Norwalk girls posted a 55-32 victory over the Senators.
Erica Cohens scored 16 points and Katie Schmidt added eight points for the Lady Bears, who defeated the Senators for the eight consecutive game.
