McMahon Boys Basketball Earns First Win Of Season

The boys basketball team is winless no more.

Larry McKinney scored 12 points Friday and Timmy Hinton added 11 as the Senators held off New Canaan 53-51 for their first victory of the season.

McKinney also grabbed 10 rebounds for McMahon, which improved to 1-6. Jimmy Martinez contributed 10 points in the win.

New Canan fell to 1-6 under first-year coach Mike Halley despite a 27-point effort by Willie Burger, the only player in double figures for the Rams.

McMahon jumped out to a 25-15 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half, although the Rams made it close at the end.

Seth von Kuhn scored 16 points as the Ridgefield High School boys basketball team remained unbeaten with a 60-40 victory over Norwalk.

Jack Heller added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers, who improved to 7-0 while handing Norwalk its second loss.

Kurt Steidl also had a double-double for the Tigers with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Norwalk (5-2) was paced by Rashenn Thompson's 14 points. Roy Kane added eight as no other Bear hit for double figures.

Ridgefield took control early, jumping out to a 15-5 first-quarter lead and extending its cushion to 36-15 at the half.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Norwalk.

Erica Cohens scored 18 points as the Norwalk girls basketball team remained hot with a 64-48 victory over slumping Ridgefield.

Katie Schmidt added 16 points for the Bears, who improved to 5-3 with their fifth straight victory.

Norwalk's attack featured balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Emma Oyomba added 12 points and Alexis Noonan chipped in with 11.

The Bears jumped out to a 35-19 halftime lead, handing last season's FCIAC finalists their fifth consecutive loss.

Andrea Ferrero scored 16 points and Gemma Howard added 11 for the Tigers, who dropped to 3-6.

Sarah Mannelly played her best all-around game of the season Friday, scoring 25 points to lead the New Canaan girls basketball team to a 66-47 victory over McMahon.

Mannelly also had had nine assists, eight steals and six rebounds for the Rams, who pulled away in the second half after a slow start.

The contest was tied 18-18 at the half, but the Rams (6-3) only outscored the Senators 48-29 in the second half.

Courtney Rogers added 13 points for New Canaan while Colleen Pellegrini added a career-high 10 and pulled down eight rebounds.

Jazmine Taylor scored 14 points and Kayla Crosswelle added 12 for the Senators, who dropped to 2-7.
