Norwalk Scores and Standings: July 15

Norwak begins play in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament on Saturday at Waterford at 2 p.m. against the District Seven champion. It is the second of three games scheduled for the day.

If Norwalk wins, it will play in the winner's bracket semifinal on Sunday at 5 p.m. If it loses, it will play in the loser's bracket on Sunday at 2 p.m. at New London.

The championship game is set for July 23 with the "if necessary" game scheduled for July 23. The winner advances to the New England Regionals.  

The Norwalk senior American Legion team improved to 19-7 with Thursday's 4-2 win over Trumbull. It concludes the regular season against Bridgeport on Sunday at the City Hall Annex at 11 a.m.

The American Legion play-in state tournament begins on Tuesday. Greenwich, Norwalk, Trumbull and Stamford have qualified from zone four.

-- Former New York Knicks star Allan Houston will be at the Norwalk YMCA on Saturday from 12-2 p.m. to help kickoff the Father Child Mentor Program.

Currently a Knicks' executive, Houston will will be on hand to speak and work with the fathers and children participating in the first session.

The Father Child Mentor Program (also known as the F.I.S.L.L. program, which stands for Faith, Integrity, Sacrifice, Leadership, Legacy) is a seven-week series of two-hour sessions designed to provide fun and relationship-building opportunities for fathers or father-figures and their middle-school age boys and girls.

In addition to building upon basketball skills, the program, which begins in July, will feature character-building discussions based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s speeches.

Houston is familiar with Norwalk, having sponsored a basketball camp at the YMCA last summer.

Houston averaged 17.3 points during his 12-year NBA career, the last nine of which were spent with the Knicks.
