Norwalk defeated North Haven 9-3 Saturday in the first round of the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament in Waterford.

Norwalk took control early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 6-1 lead.  

The Norwalk junior American Legion team clinched a berth in the state tournament on Sunday, defeating Fairfield, 5-2. Earlier Sunday, Norwalk lost to Stamford 6-5, keeping the pressure on the team

Fairfield would have gotten in with a win and forced Norwalk to win its regular-season finale on Monday against Bridgeport, set for 5:30 p.m. at Beardsley Park in Bridgeport.

The Norwalk senior Legion team finished 20-7 following Sunday's 9-8 win over Greenwich.

Norwalk settled for second place, four games behind Greenwich, and now enters the play-in tournament.

A total of eight teams from zone four qualified for postseason play - Greenwich, Norwalk, Trumbull, and Stamford in the senior ranks and Stamford, Ridgefield, Trumbull and Norwalk in the juniors.

Norwalk senior, the No. 10 seed, hosts the Ellington-Waterford winner on Wednesday for a spot in the main tournament. The junior pairings with be announced Tuesday.
