The Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars hockey team is headed to the national tournament after winning the New England Regional Tier 1 title this past weekend at the Shelton Ice Rinks.

The 14-and-under team punched its ticket to the nationals with a 7-0 victory over the New Hampshire Avalanche on Sunday. Mid-Fairfield went 5-0 in the regionals, including a 3-0 semifinal victory over the Connecticut Polar Bears, whom they defeated twice in the tournament.

Mid-Fairfield, which improved to 42-5 this season, will be headed to Detroit in early April for the national championships. Norwalkers on the team include Nicole Lue and Annie DeFrino and one of the coaches is Norwalk's Moe Tarrant.

The Mid Fairfield Stars 14-and-under girls hockey team defeated the New Hampshire Avalanche, 7-0, to win the New England Regional Tier 1 Tournament Sunday at Shelton.

The Stars rolled past the Connecticut Polar Bears, 3-0, in the semifinals to earn a berth in the championship game. Mid Fairfield will play in the national tournament next month in Detroit.

The team went 5-0 to win the tournament, including two wins over the Polar Bears. It outscored opponents 32-3 in those five games, and improved to 42-5 this season. The team includes Nicole Lue and Annie DeFrino of Norwalk, Sasha Fritts of Darien and Taegan Blackwell of Fairfield. It is coached by Moe Tarrant of Norwalk and Ryan Equale of Fairfield. Equale is a former star at Wilton High School and UConn.
