1. Norwalk boys soccer to host Stamford in state tourney.

After getting upset in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs as the top seed for the second straight season, the Norwalk boys soccer team is hoping it can stick around in the Class LL state tournament this time.

Last year, Norwalk posted a 14-2-0 regular-season record, but had little to show for it as the Bears were stunned by New Canaan in the FCIAC playoffs before getting bounced by No. 13 seed Simsbury in the second round of the states.

A year later, Norwalk put together another stellar regular season, going 13-1-2. Once again, however, the Bears were shown the door in the FCIAC playoffs by New Canaan.

With 27 regular-season wins under its belt in the last two years, third-seeded Norwalk is desperate for an extended run in the state tournament.

The Bears will be a heavy favorite in their first round-game on Friday (7 p.m.) against No. 30 Stamford (6-9-1), the last team into the tournament.

However, Norwalk could face a test in the second round on Monday against No. 19 Westhill if the Vikings can get past No. 14 Bristol Central.

After starting 0-5, which included forfeiting three wins for using an ineligible player, Westhill was the hottest team in the FCIAC down the stretch, going 9-0-2 to land the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. The Vikings did lose to third-seeded Darien in the FCIAC quarterfinals.

Perennial state title contender Staples (12 state championships) is in Norwalk's part of the draw, meaning the Bears could see the Wreckers in the quarterfinals.

Also in Norwalk's quarter of the draw is defending state champion Farmington, which defeated Staples in last year's finals. Farmington and Staples are on course to meet in the second round.  It would be an unusually early meeting for the state powers, but the Wreckers have a relatively low No. 11 seeding. Farmington is sixth.

The McMahon field hockey team (6-7-3-0) hosts Southington in a Class L qualifying game on Thursday. The winner plays at No. 2 seed Glastonbury in the first round on Friday (2 p.m.).

Norwalk (12-2-1-0) has the No. 3 seed and will host the Westhill-Fairfield Warde winner in another first-round clash on Friday (5 p.m.) Westhill hosts Warde on Thursday in a qualifying contest.
