In a dominating performance Monday, the third-seeded Bears defeated Westhill 4-1 to set up a quarterfinal meeting on Wednesday with No. 6 seed and defending state champion Farmington, which advanced with a 1-0 win over Staples.

Nic Zuniga and Kevin Joslyn each scored two goals for Norwalk, which was in control after jumping out to a 2-0 halftime lead.

Mateo Gallego scored in the second half for the Vikings, who finished the year at 10-7-2.

Westhill did well to get this far as the Vikings started the year 0-5 after being forced to forfeit three games for using an illegal player. They responded with a 9-0-2 tear to qualify for the FCIAC playoffs.

Westhill goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach kept Monday's game relatively close with 10 saves.

Svet Kozak stopped three shots for Norwalk, which improved to 15-2-2 after getting eliminated in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs. Last year, the Bears were ousted in the second round of the state tournament as a No. 4 seed, so they were determined to get further this season.

In other Class LL games involving FCIAC teams on Monday, top seed Pomperaug defeated Greenwich 5-2 and Trumbull slipped past Simsbury, 2-1.

In Class L, Darien eliminated defending state champion New Canaan 1-0 and top seed Wethersfield outlasted Wilton 6-4 in overtime.

2 Norwalk field hockey defeats New Canaan

The Norwalk field hockey team gained a measure of revenge Monday.

Katie Schmidt and Christine Mase scored for the third-seeded Bears, who defeated No. 11 New Canaan 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament.

Norwalk, which improved to 14-3-1-0, avenged a 1-0 loss to the Rams in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs earlier this month.

The Bears will take on No. 2 Glastonbury in the semifinals on Wednesday at Sheehan at 6:30 p.m.

Schmidt opened the scoring in the first half and Mase made it 2-0 in the second.

New Canaan, which finished the season at 11-6-1-2, didn't go quietly and pulled within 2-1 on a goalie by Melanie Sztorc with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Shannon O'Malley made two saves for Norwalk and Britt Gardella stopped four shots for New Canaan.
