The Norwalk football team will make its first postseason appearance in 13 years on Tuesday when the fifth-seeded Bears visit No. 4 Conard (9-1) in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state playoffs. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Norwalk-Conard winner will face either top seed Xavier (10-0) or No. 8 Glastonbury (8-2) in the semifinals on Saturday.
Norwalk never has appeared in a title game. Conard lost in its only final, 7-0 to West Haven in 1987 in Class L.
The Bears have a triple threat in their running game with Delshaun Wilson (499 yards), Johnny Anzalone (469) and Tom Joseph (409) all rushing for close to 500 yards. Norwalk's only loss was a 28-14 defeat to New Canaan.
Conard also relies heavily on the run with Ricky Cotton rushing for more than 1,200 yards to lead the Chieftains.
In Tuesday's other quarterfinals, No. 2 Staples (9-0) takes on No. 7 Ridgefield (8-2) in a game that will be played at Wilton since the Wreckers' field doesn't have lights and No. 3 Hall (9-1) entertains No. 6 Newtown (8-2).
Four FCIAC teams made for the state playoffs as New Canaan qualified in Class L. The Rams are seeking a sixth consecutive finals appearance.
The state championship games will be played at UConn's Rentschler Field in East Hartford the weekend of Dec. 9-10.
The girls got under way last week. Winter practice begins Monday for boys basketball and hockey.

Norwalk native Silas Redd, a former standout at the King School in Stamford, was named to the all-Big Ten second team on Monday.
Redd was slowed by a shoulder injury late in the season, but the sophomore running back still rushed for 1,207 yards and scored seven touchdowns while playing in all 12 games for Penn State.
His average of 99.0 yards per game ranked fourth in the Big Ten. Redd was one of six players to rush for more than 1,000 yards in the league season.
Penn State concluded its regular season with a 45-7 loss at Wisconsin last week, a result that cost the Nittany Lions (9-3) a berth in the inaugural Big Ten championship game.
Redd rushed for 66 yards on only 12 carries against Wisconsin, which will face Michigan State in the Big Ten title game this weekend. Penn State will learn its bowl destination on Sunday.
