Football: McMahon Loses To Greenwich, 35-14

The McMahon football team was unable to slow down Greenwich, dropping to 3-5 after suffering a 35-14 loss Saturday to the Cardinals.

Mike Daly rushed for 105 yards and Shane Nastahowski added 98 yards and two touchdowns for Greenwich.

Nastahowski scored on TD runs of 2 and 1 yards to give the Cardinals a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Alex  McMurray and quarterback Liam O'Neil added TD runs of 6 and 3 yards to extend Greenwich's lead to 28-0 at the half.

The Senators (3-5) scored in the second half on a pair of TD runs by Trevon Forney.

Greenwich's final score came on O'Neil's 5-yard TD pass to Taylor Olmstead that made it 35-7 in the fourth quarter.

Idle Norwalk (6-1) is still fourth in the CIAC Class LL state rankings and will guarantee itself a state tournament by winning its final two game.

2. McMahon's Madaffari honored

McMahon senior Chris Madaffari has been selected as the state's male winner of the 2011 Wendy's High School Heisman Award. He will now compete for the national award that recognizes hard work, dedication and execellence in athletics, academics and community leadership.

Awarded in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman, the Wendy's High School  Heisman, now in its 18th year, has set the standard for high school  student-athletes.

Madaffari will compete against winners from other regions across the country for a chance to be named one of 12 national finalists to find the  nation's top scholar-athletes. The finalists will compete  for the national title in New York on Dec. 9.

National finalists will be  featured during a televised ceremony on ESPN networks and will receive gold medals and $2,000 awards for their high schools.

In addition, one male and one female  national winner will each receive a Wendy's High School Heisman trophy and a  donation from Wendy's in the amount of $10,000 to their high school.

A cross country standout, Madaffari is the son of McMahon athletic director Joe Madaffari.

Start of state tournaments delayed

The CIAC announced Thursday it has postponed the start of its state tournaments to allow extra time for conferences to complete their own playoff tournaments.

State tournaments in soccer, field hockey, volleyball and swimming, scheduled to start on Monday, now will be begin Thursday. Pairings will be announced Wednesday.

Volleyball and field hockey state championship games now will take place Nov. 18-19. Girls and boys soccer championship games will be played the following weekend.
