The Vikings (9-5-2), who appeared headed for a long season when they had to forfeit three early victories after it was learned that one of their players competed in a men's league.

However, Westhill recovered from an 0-5 start by going 9-0-2 and will enter the playoffs as the league's hottest team.

The Vikings, who needed to win Wednesday's game to get in, secured the No. 6 seed and will visit No. 3 seed Darien (11-2-3) in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Westhill, Wilton and New Canaan all tied with 29 points, but Westhill secured the sixth seed based on having the best record among the three team. Wilton grabbed the No. 7 seed by virtue of its win over New Canaan.

In the other quarterfinal matchups, No. 2 Trumbull (11-1-4) hosts No. 7 Wilton (9-5-2) and No. 4 Staples (10-2-4), which is seeking its fourth consecutive FCIAC title, is at home for No. 5 Greenwich (9-4-3).

The quarterfinal games will be played at the sites of the higher-seeded teams. The semifinals are set for Tuesday at 5 and 7 p.m. at Fairfield Ludlowe with the championship game being played on Thursday at Norwalk at 7 p.m.

2. Norwalk to face New Canaan in field hockey playoffs

The matchups for the FCIAC field hockey playoffs also were determined Wednesday, and in a scheduling quirk, No. 3 Norwalk (10-2-1-0) also will face New Canaan (8-4-1-0), the No. 6 seed, in that sport as well.

Fairfield Ludlowe (5-6-1-1) also earned a playoff berth Wednesday with a 2-1 victory at McMahon.

The Falcons grabbed the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Wilton (11-2-0-0) in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Ludlowe finished with 12 points, finishing ahead of Westhill and Greenwich.

Westhill (5-7-1-1) clinched the No. 8 seed despite losing to New Canaan 3-0 on Wednesday. The Vikings finished in a tie with Greenwich with 11 points, but won the tiebreaker based on their victory over the Cardinals during the regular season.

Westhill's reward is a matchup with top seed Darien (13-0-0-0, which has not lost since 2007.

In the other quarterfinal matchup, No. 5 Stamford (8-4-1-0) faces No. Staples (7-2-3-1). Stamford won a tiebreaker with New Canaan because of a win over the Rams in the regular season.

All quarterfinal games will be played at McMahon on Saturday and the times will be announced on Thursday.
