Casey Smith scored 17 points as the Danbury girls basketball team defeated Norwalk 53-28 Wednesday in the season opener for both teams.

It was a disappointing start for the Bears, who return seven seniors from last year's 13-8 team that qualified for the FCIAC playoffs as the No. 7 seed.
Norwalk managed only two points in the opening quarter and never recovered after falling into a 16-2 hole at the end of the period.

The Bears held the Hatters to only four points in the second quarter but managed only five themselves and trailed 20-7 at the half. Norwalk was then outscored 38-21 in the second half.
Emma Oyomba led Norwalk with just eight points while Erica Cohens added seven.

Erica Stein poured in 23 points Wednesday as the Staples girls basketball team routed McMahon 62-29 in the season opener for both teams.
Jess Coelho added 13 and Nikki Bukovsky chipped in with 11 for the Lady Wreckers, who are looking to improve upon last season's 8-13 record. Staples barely extended its streak of making the state tournament to 28 consecutive seasons, the second-longest in state history behind Masuk.
Kyle Courtney and Kayla Crosswelle had six points apiece to lead McMahon, which is coming off a 5-15 season.
Staples opened leads of 16-10 after the first quarter and 34-21 at the half, then put away the contest with a 19-3 spurt in the third period.
Coelho and Sydney Houseworth had 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively, for the Lady Wreckers.
