Norwalk native Noel Thomas Jr., a junior running back at St. Luke's, has verbally committed to the University of Connecticut to continue his football career, the Norwalk Hour reported.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 11 touchowns last season and also caught six passes for 167 yards and a TD.

"I decided to commit to UConn because it has been my No. 1 option since day one," Thomas told The Hour.

According to the newspaper, Thomas also considered Boston College, Rutgers, Temple and Maryland.

wrestler Brandon Riggins won the gold medal Saturday in the 195-pound weight class in the state Open championships in New Haven and advanced to the New England championships next weekend in Providence.

After receiving a first-round bye, Riggins defeated Derren Marcus of Vinal Tech 18-1 in the second round, then pinned Zachary Maxwell of Southington at 2:25.

In the semifinals, Riggins handled Mikell Washingon of Staples 15-2 before stopping No. 2 Kyle Foster of Somers 17-8 in the finals.

Riggins, who finished third in the state Open last year at 189 pounds, remained undefeated this season, improving his record to 39-0.
