Tax bills were due July 1, 2020, and reflect the first installment of charges due on the grand list of October 1, 2019. Normally bills would have been due August 1, but Mayor Harry Rilling and the Norwalk Common Council approved an extended grace period due to COVID-19.

Interest will be charged on late payments at the rate of 6% beginning on October 2. This represents 1.5 % per month for four months: July, August, September, and October. Interest reverts back to the due date of July 1, and portion of a month is considered the equivalent of a month for interest calculation in accordance with state law. The 6% rate will remain the same throughout the month of October.

The Tax Collector’s walk-up window at City Hall is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. No appointment is needed, and the window does not close for lunch. Taxpayers are required to wear a mask or face covering. Cash payments are not accepted at the window.

Taxpayers may also pay by mail. Payments legibly postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before October 1 are timely regardless of when they are received by the Tax Collector’s office.
Taxpayers may also pay online with an ‘E Check’ (ACH payment), debit, credit, or ATM card by visiting norwalkct.org/taxcollector. They may also call toll free (203) 318-9523, and pay over the telephone using their card. Credit, debit, and ATM cards may also be used to pay in-person at City Hall. ‘E Check’ payments are an efficient, convenient, and economical option, incurring an additional charge of only $0.95.

Taxpayers who are unsure about what they owe may look up their taxes online by accessing the “E Tax Bill Lookup” feature on the City’s website for more information. Taxpayers looking to research what they paid last year for income tax purposes may access five years of tax payment history through the “E Tax Bill Lookup” feature.

Failure to have received a tax bill does not exempt the taxpayer from interest charges. Interest is charged on all late payments, with absolutely no exception, in accordance with state law.
