NORWALK, CT — City officials announced this week Norwalk has officially transitioned from its ".org" website and email domain to ".gov."

In a news release Friday, Mayor Harry Rilling said the city's website is now www.norwalkct.gov.

Additionally, all city employees with a ".org" email address domain will have the same letters at the beginning of their new ".gov" email address. Rilling provided the example that an email address such as "jdoe@norwalkct.org" would now be "jdoe@norwalkct.gov."

“The city of Norwalk made the decision to switch to '.gov' because '.gov' domains are reserved exclusively for U.S. government entities and provide a clear and trusted indication to the public that the website they are visiting is an official government website and not a fake or malicious site," Rilling said in a news release. "Additionally, '.gov' domains are subject to stricter requirements and security standards, which will help prevent cyber-attacks and protect sensitive government information."

Since ".gov" domains are exclusively granted to U.S.-based government entities, the transition aims to ensure visitors of the city's ".gov" websites and recipients of the city's ".gov" email accounts that they're visiting an official government website or being contacted by a government employee, Rilling said.

The government domain has top-level security features that are not available to the ".org" domain, according to Rilling. Transitioning to this new domain enhances the credibility and authority of the city's website and increases the level of security and reliability of data and information.

The ".org" city website and emails with that domain will remain operational to the public until further notice, Rilling said. All emails addressed to ".org" email addresses and searches for the city's previous website pages will automatically be redirected to the ".gov" website and email domains.
